Popular Types of Timber Sheets

There are various types of timber sheet building materials available on the market today; let’s take a look at some of them now:

Plywood is made from thin layers (or ‘plies’) of wood veneer glued together to form a strong panel with a smooth face on one side and grooves on the other. It can be used for a variety of structural applications such as flooring, wall covering, partitioning, roofing, making it one of the most versatile building materials around.

Chipboard is made from wood chips compressed together with glue under high pressure forming sheets which have an even thickness throughout with no visible grain pattern. It is generally used for non-structural purposes such as shelving or floor underlayment where strength isn’t paramount but cost is important.

MDF (Medium density fiberboard) is made from recycled wood fibers which are bonded together with an adhesive under extreme pressure and heat. MDF tends to be denser than chipboard so it’s often used as a substitute for solid woods when strength is required but weight needs to remain low. It’s also very smooth so it’s often used in furniture making or as an alternative to plywood in certain applications such as cabinet doors.

OSB (Oriented strand board) is made from layers of wood strands compressed together with wax and adhesives under extreme pressure forming sheets which have an even thickness throughout with no visible grain pattern similar to chipboard but usually stronger depending on usage requirements. It can be used for structural applications such as roofing/flooring etc., where strength is paramount but cost needs to remain low compared with plywood etc.
